Nicholas Winton 1909  (cuurently 105)

Sir Nicholas George Winton whom was boran in 1909 is currently 105. He was a British humanitarian who organized the resuce of 669, mostly jewish, children from Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second world War, ina plan of action later known as the Kindertransport. His interest for Humanitarian work sprouted just before Christmas 1938, Winton had planned for a skiing trip but istead decided to visit Prague where he assisted his friend Martin Blake by helping him in Jewish welfare work. Nicholas single-handedly created and established an organization to aid children from Jewish families who were at risk by the Nazis.

In november 1938 following Kristallnacht in Nazi-ruled Germany, the House Of Commons approved a bill allwoing refugees under the age of 17 to enter Britain, as long as they had a place to stay and a warranty of 50 dollars was deposited forbtheir eventual return to their origion. A challenging obstacle throqn at them was the Netherlands, because after Kristallnacht the Dutch government offically closed its borders to any jewish refugees. If any were found crossing they would immediately be returned to Germany even when Kristallnacht was very well known. However Winton despite the governments decision he succeeded in smuggling all the children across, thanks to the guarantees he had obtained from Britain. The trains starting to set off from the station to Britain and all the children were safely paired with some new guardians. However unfortunately the last train containing 250 jews did not reach safely as Hitler had already invaded Poland and World War II had begun.

Nicholas found a home or a place to live for all the children he rescued and arranged for them a safe trip to Britain although many of their parents most likely perished in the Auschwitz concerntration camp. The British have labeled him "British Schindler". On october 28 2014 he was awarded the highest honour of the Czech republic, the Order of the White Lyon, by the Czech President

Milos Zeman.
