Let's keep the history going!
Philipp Auerbach, was born in Germany and he moved to Belgium where he became the boss of a chemical import-export company. After the Germans invaded Belgium he was arrested, sent to Gurs and was later sent to Auschwitz. His wife, Martha, and daughter, Helen, managed to get out of the country and go to Cuba and then come to the United States. In Asuchwitz, Auerbach served as the chief chemist preparing medicines and pesticides. In 1946 he was appointed state commissioner of the Bavarian provincial government for religious, political and racial victims of the Nazis, there by becoming one of the first Jews to play a role in postwar German political life. He was one of the first to work for the financial committe of victims of Nazis. In 1951 he was accused of breaking the rules although his suporters argued that he gave all the money to victims. He was found guilty and got put in jail for 2 and a half years by a court of five judges, three of whom had had contacts with the Nazi party. Two days later, Auerbach committed suicide as did many victims in the holocaust. Four years later he was cleared of all charges. He didn't live to be cleared but we all know he is a truly inspirational man.
