By 1940, most of Western Europe had been conquered and was currently being controlled by the Nazis. During this terrible situation, the Japanese Consul Chiune Sugihara suddenly became one of the Jews only hopes to survive. The fate of thousands of families depended on his decisions whether to give them Visas or not. The Germans were conquering more and more land towards the east so in July 1940, the Soviet authorities instructed all foreign embassies to leave Kaunas. Almost all left immediately, but Chiune Sugihara requested and received a 20-day extension. He then wrote thousands of transit Visas for Jewish families even though that was against his instructions by the committee back in Tokyo, Japan. He is a kind man, who put his life at risk to help less fortunate people without being ordered to.

He is a Righteous Gentile and saved thousands of lives even though it meant him losing his high positioned job and being humiliated in front of Japan. We can look up to him and be inspired by his generosity and his care for the Jews. He was an incredible man who should always be remembered.

Chuine Sugihara 1900-1986
